Glossary of Dr. Bert Skincare Ingredients
Acrylates Copolymer – Film-forming agent that has water binding properties that when applied leaves a pliable, smooth feeling over the skin.
Algae Extract – Natural thickening agent. Also has water binding and some antioxidant activity.
Allantoin – Has keratolytic effect, increasing the water content of the extracellular matrix and enhancing the desquamation of upper layers.
Almond Oil (Amygdalus Dulcis) – Excellent source of skin replenishing ingredients such as triglycerides and fatty acids.
Aloe Barbadensis – Soothing agent with water binding properties. Often provides a refreshing sensation on the skin.
Aluminum Silica – Exfoliant with slight abrasive actions.
Arnica Extract (Arnica Montana) – Anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Minimizes bruising.
Avocado Oil (Persea Gratissima) – Regenerative and moisturizing properties. Source of Vitamin E with high degree of skin penetration and rapid skin absorption.
Bilbery Extract (Vaccinium Myrtillus) – Source of vitamins B,C and E. Antioxidant.
Biomin (Saccharomyces Silicon, Saccharomyces Magnesium, Saccharomyces Copper, Saccharomyces Iron and Saccharomyces Zinc Ferment) – These are bio-available minerals. Basically these “metals” are attached to a biological organism (Saccharomyces is a unicellular yeast) in order for the body to absorb and use them. These trace minerals are required in our connective tissues to stabilize cell integrity, form new cells, detoxify, and neutralize free radicals.
Bladderwrack (Fucus Vesiculosus) – Type of seaweed with anti-aging properties of decreasing skin thickness and improving elasticity.
Butylene Glycol – Viscosity decreasing agent with slight penetration enhancing properties.
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride – Derived from coconut oil and gylcerin. Acts as an emollient and skin replenishing agent. Fatty acids help to prevent moisture loss.
Caprylyl Glycol – Emollient skin conditioning agent with some possible antimicrobial properties.
Carbomer – Thickening agent with stabilizing properties.
Castor Oil (Ricanis Communis and Castor Isostearate Succinate) – These are bio-available minerals. Basically these “metals” are attached to a biological organism (Saccharomyces is a unicellular yeast) in order for the body to absorb and use them.
These trace minerals are required in our connective tissues to stabilize cell integrity, form new cells, detoxify, and neutralize free radicals.
Cetearyl Alcohol – Emulsifier used to stabilize oil and water mixtures.
Cetyl Alcohol – Skin emollient, cream thickener, and product emulsifier.
Chamomile (Chamomilla Matricaria) – Anti-inflammatory properties. Soothes damaged skin cells.
Chrysin – Anti-inflammatory properties. Has ability to scavenge free radials making it a good antioxidant and anti-aging component.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine – Foaming agent and gentle surfactant.
Cococaprylate – Skin emollient and product emulsifier.
Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus) – Mostly comprised of water and Vitamin C. Soothes skin. Anti-oxidant. May offer skin tightening ability especially around the eyes.
Cyclopentasiloxane – Type of silicone to impart silk like feeling on the skin. Forms permeable barrier to help prevent moisture loss.
Decyl Glucoside – Natural surfactant for foaming products and skin cleansers.
Dimethicone – Lubricant and skin conditioning agent.
Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate – Surfactant used in skin cleansers and foams. Based on fatty acids from coconut oil.
Emulsifying Wax – Emulsifier.
Gingko Biloba Extract – Antioxidant, skin soothing properties.
Glaucine (BodyFit=Coco-Glucoside,Caprylyl Glycol, Alcohol, Glaucine) – Glaucine is a multifunctional molecule that stimulates lipolysis and inhibits the appearance of new fat cells, regulating the flow of calcium. It visibly reduces the visual display of cellulite and helps to improve water distribution and drainage in tissue. It restores the skin’s firmness. Lipolysis stimulation +86.5%. Reduction of new adipocytes’ apparition -93%.
Glycerin – Naturally found in skin to help replenish and restore moisture. Must be combined with emollients/oils.
Glyceryl Stearate – Acts as a lubricant on the skin’s surface and also forms a protective layer to help prevent water loss.
Grape Fruit Extract (Vitis Vinifera) – Potent antioxidant. Useful to reduce environmental skin damage.
Grape Seed Oil (Vitis Vinifera) – Emollient with strong antioxidant properties.
Grapefruit Seed Extract (Citrus Grandis) – Natural preservative with aseptic, antiviral, antifungal,and antimicrobial properties.
Green Tea leaf Extract (Camellia Sinensis) (Japanese) – Powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging properties. Well documented. EGCG polyphenols are widely known for their anti-carcinogenic and antioxidant abilities, and have been shown to inhibit the body’s immune suppression and skin cancer induction that typically follows UVB exposure.
Guarana (Paullinia Cupana) – Higher source of caffeine than coffee bean. Has constricting properties on the skin which leads to tightening.
Haloxyl ( Steareth-20, N-Hydroxysuccinimide, Chrysin, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7) – One of the primary active ingredients in Haloxyl is chrysin, which is a natural element found in certain plants and in bee pollen. This ingredient has been proven effective in reducing inflammation, which may reduce dark circles and puffiness under the eyes. Haloxyl also contains palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, which is a combination of amino acids that are formulated to boost the production of collagen in the skin, causing an increase in firmness while it reduces inflammation.
Hemp Seed Oil (Cannabis Sativa) – Decreases skin dryness. Soothes the skin. Some antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action.
Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate) – Natural component in skin. Extraordinary ability to hold water. HA content decreases with age.
Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein – Skin conditioner and film forming agent to help prevent water loss. Improves elasticity.
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose – Water soluble thickener.
Jojoba Seed Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis) – Closely resembles human sebum. Useful for skin conditioning.
Lactobacillus Ferment – Probiotic useful to decrease presence of bad bacteria.
Lemon Extract (Citrus Medica Limonum) – Source of Vitamin C
Mangifera Indica (mango seed) – Mangifera Indica (mango) seed is a skin conditioning agent. It has a high Vitamin C content which makes it a skin “lightener” as well. It is known to be rich in antioxidants and emollients as well as Vitamins A, C, and E, and it can be used to soften and moisturize rough and dry skin. Its natural properties are useful for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Matrixyl 3000=Butylene Glycol, Aqua, Carbomer, Polysorbate-20, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3 – Peptide-fatty acid complex that stimulates natural skin matrix replenishment leading to firmness and wrinkle reduction.
Meadowfoam (Limanthes Alba) – Skin conditioning agent.
Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) – is a pure organic sulfur which is found in all plants and tissues. Considered to be nature’s beauty mineral due to it’s ability to enhance collagen bundles and restore the foundation for healthy skin. It can help with inflammatory skin conditions. MSM is a vital component of our skin health.
Mushroom Extracts (Mannentake,Shiitake) – Brighten, lighten, and even out skin tone. Antioxidant and moisturizer. Supplies nutrients to skin.
N-Hydroxysuccinimide – Activates the elimination of blood originated pigments responsible for the dark colour and inflammation found under the eyes.
Niacinamide – Brightens skin tone. Restoring properties. Useful to revive skin’s healthy texture.
Oilve Oil (Squalane/Olea Fruit Extract) – Antioxidant, deep moisturizing ability and exfolliant cleanser.
Oleyl Alcohol – Multipurpose surfactant, emulsifier, emollient and thickener.
Orange Fruit Extract (Citrus Aurantium) – Conditioning, viscosity controlling agent, fragrance.
Pentylene Glycol – Water and oil soluble humectant. Also used as solvent and preservative.
Phenoxyethanol – Preservative.
Pisum Sativum Peptide – Hypoallergenic protein that moisturizes with film forming properties to give skin silky feel. Antioxidant.
Polysorbate-20 – Emulsifier.
Potassium Sorbate – Natural Preservative.
Radish Root Ferment Filtrate (Leuconstoc) – Natural preservative.
Retinyl Palmitate – Vitamin A. Converted to retinol then retinoic acid once absorbed through the skin.
Rooibos (Aspalathus Linearis) – Anti-inflammatory, Antimicrobial, Soothing.

Saccharomyces/Sea Mineral Ferment – Mineral nutrients in an skin friendly absorbable form.
Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii) – Classified as an NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor) maintaining the natural integrity of the skin. Facilitates healing, prevents dermal irritation and regenerates the skin.
Sodium Chloride – Preservative.
Soybean Sterols (Glycine Soja) – Lubricant and emollient. Rich in proteins, minerals and vitamins.
Soy Wax/Beeswax/Candelilla Wax – These are the base of lip balms. Great natural alternative to petrolatum based products. Soothe and moisturize the lips.
Squalene – Because it’s part of our skin’s natural lubrication, squalene has a moisturizing effect on the skin. This ingredient not only provides hydration, but it can also help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. This is likely due to its antioxidant properties; squalene is able to prevent free radical damage that causes the breakdown of collagen and elastin.
Steareth-20 – Emulsifier and surfactant.
Stearic Acid – Thickener and surfactant with good cleanser activity.
Sucrose Cocoate – Effective moisturizer. Increases gentleness and creaminess of creams and lotions.
Sugarcane Extract (Saccharum Officinarum) – Natural exfolliant (gylcolic acid) which
brightens and smoothes the skin.
Sugarmaple Extract (Acer Saccharinum) – Natural alpha hydroxy acid (malic acid) to slough off dead skin cells. Exfolliant.
